The Right Is Right About Immigration Even When It Is Wrong About Everything Else

January 6, 2026 · Frisian News

Conservative parties across Europe scored political wins on immigration by identifying real problems that centrist governments ignored for years. But their solutions often rest on shallow analysis and tribal instinct rather than evidence.

English

Listen to any immigration debate in Brussels or Amsterdam, and you hear the same tired script from the left: migration strengthens economies, enriches culture, and solves demographic decline. The right, meanwhile, points to crowded schools, housing shortages, and wage pressure in low-skill sectors. On the facts here, the right wins. For years, establishment parties pretended these problems did not exist. They lectured ordinary citizens for raising concerns while statistics showed their worries had meat on the bone.

But winning an argument about what is wrong does not mean you have answers for what comes next. Here is where the right often fumbles. Many conservative politicians and commentators treat immigration as a moral failure of the receiving country rather than a complex system that includes labor demand, geographic realities, and human desperation. They diagnose the disease accurately but prescribe medicine based on anger rather than function.

The right correctly observes that rapid demographic change in specific neighborhoods creates real friction. Teachers report challenges they never faced before. Housing markets price out locals. Crime statistics in some areas spike. The left responded to these facts not with solutions but with accusations of bigotry. That tactical blunder handed the right an entire generation of voters. Yet many right-wing governments, once in power, struggle to move beyond slogan and sentiment to policy that actually works.

Effective immigration control requires boring technical competence: border enforcement that does not involve theatrical cruelty, integration programs that target newcomers with weak language skills, and honest talk about which sectors genuinely need labor and which do not. Most right-wing parties talk tough on borders but then hire cheap workers anyway. They win elections by naming the problem but govern like the previous lot because their donors demand it.

The public sense that something broke down is correct. Centrist governments for two decades treated immigration as technocratic rather than political. They set policy in Brussels or The Hague without local consent and then blamed ordinary people for failing to love the outcome. The right exploited that opening with brutal honesty about what citizens actually felt. But honesty about a problem and competence at solving it remain two different things. We will learn the difference soon enough.

Sikeleararen melde problemen dy't se nea foar tsjin kamen. Wenningmarkten prisze lokale minsken út. Kriminaliteitssifer yn guon gebieten stije. Links regeerde op dizze feiten net mei oplossingen men mei beskuldizjes fan foaroardiel.

De maste rjochts partijen sprekke heard oer grinzen men huure goedkeap arbaid toch yn.

Sintrumsregerings behanneljen ynskriuwing twa dessenia lang as teknisk yn stee fan polityk. Se stelden belied yn Brussel of Den Haach yn sûnder lokale ynstimming en beskuldigen dan gewoane minsken fan it net leaflik hawwen fan it resultaat. Wy sille it ferskil gau genoch leare kenne.
