During the height of the farmer protests in 2022, every major Dutch broadcaster had a crew in Friesland. The images were good: tractors blocking highways, manure spread on provincial offices, Dutch flags flying upside down. The visuals told a story of rural anger, and urban audiences found it briefly fascinating.

Then the cameras left. And nothing changed.

This is the consistent experience of Frisian politics, Frisian culture, and Frisian concerns in the national media. Friesland appears when it provides good pictures. It disappears when it requires sustained attention and the willingness to understand a place on its own terms.

The nitrogen crisis has been running for seven years. The language decline has been documented for forty. The housing pressure from urban buyers has been building for a decade. None of these is a new story. But each requires a reporter willing to spend time here, learn the context, and resist the temptation to reduce everything to a simple national narrative.

The Dutch media is not incapable of this kind of reporting. It does it for Rotterdam, for the Randstad, for every region that contains a significant share of the national audience. It simply does not do it for Friesland, because Friesland is not where the audience is.

Frisian News exists because that is not good enough. The stories here are real, they matter, and they deserve to be told by people who understand them, not by journalists parachuted in for a protest and gone before the evening news.

We are not a backdrop.
