De Sahel Stoartet Yn en Europa Sil It Fiele

April 10, 2026 · Frisian News

Drought, war, and state collapse across the Sahel region have triggered mass migration toward Europe. The crisis stems from failed interventions and climate pressure that European leaders refuse to address directly.

De haadstêd Ouagadougou fan Burkina Faso berget no mear as twa miljoen ferpleatste persoanen, fan wa in soad yn de ôfrûne achttjin moannen oankommen binne. Flechtlingekampen rinne oer, wetterfrachtwagens steane yn de rige by it oanbrêken fan de dei, en bewapene groepen kontrolearje rûtes nei it suden rjochting Mauritanië en Mali. Dit is gjin fiere trageedzje. Dit is it startpunt foar migraasjeweagen dy't binnen moannen, net jierren, Europeeske súdkusten berikke sille.

Europa hat in grut part fan dizze rommel feroarsake troch twa desennia lang militêre yntervensjies en it stypjen fan korrupte kliïntsteaten. De Frânske militêre oanwêzigens yn Mali, Niger en Burkina Faso brocht gjin stabiliteit. It ferankere lokale machthawwers, fuorre korrupsje en liet befolkingen wanhopliger achter. Doe't dy befolkingen har lieders úteinlik ôfwiisden, diene Europeeske machten as wiene se skokt. Se hiene gjin plan foar wat dernei komme soe.

Klimaatferfall yn de Sahel giet flugger as burokraten tajaan kinne. De reinfal is sûnt de jierren sechstich mei sechtich prosint sakke. Marren drûgje út. Kuddes stjerre. Gewaaksen mislearje trije jier op 'e rige. Migraasje wurdt gjin kar mar oerlibjen. In boer mei twa jier mislearre rispings sil nei Europa rinne. In mem dy't har bern toarst lijen sjocht sil smokkelders betelje. Gjin helpprogram, gjin grinsmuorre, gjin EU-retoariek oer yntegraasje feroaret dizze rekkening.

Europa reagearret noch altyd ferkeard. Brussel smyt jild nei fiere regearingen dy't har eigen grûngebiet net kontrolearje kinne, docht as dat ûntwikkelingsprosjekten wurkje, en is dan fersteld wannear't minsken har ferpleatse. Underwilens skerpt it blok asylregels oan en finansiert it Libyske kustbewaking om boaten werom te stjoeren. Dit keapet tiid metten yn wiken, gjin oplossingen metten yn jierren.

De Sahel sil mear minsken nei it noarden stjoere. Europa boude de foarwearden foar dy ynstorting en wegeret no ûnder eagen te sjen wat dêrút fuortkomt. Muorren en beliedsrapporten feroarje dat feit net.

Burkina Faso's capital Ouagadougou now hosts over two million displaced people, many arrived in the past eighteen months. Refugee camps overflow, water trucks queue at dawn, and armed groups control routes south toward Mauritania and Mali. This is not distant tragedy. This is the starting point for migration waves that will reach Europe's southern shores within months, not years.

Europe created much of this mess through two decades of military interventions and the propping up of corrupt client states. France's military presence in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso did not bring stability. It entrenched local strongmen, fed corruption, and left populations more desperate than before. When those populations finally rejected their rulers, European powers pretended shock. They did not plan for what comes next.

Climate collapse in the Sahel moves faster than bureaucrats can admit. Rainfall has fallen sixty percent since the 1960s. Lakes dry up. Herds die. Crops fail three years running. Migration becomes not choice but survival. A farmer with two years of failed harvests will walk to Europe. A mother watching her children thirst will pay smugglers. No aid program, no border wall, no EU rhetoric about integration stops this arithmetic.

Europe's response remains backward. Brussels throws money at distant governments that cannot control their own territory, pretends development projects work, and then acts surprised when people move. Meanwhile, the bloc tightens asylum rules and funds Libyan coast guards to turn boats back. This buys time measured in weeks, not solutions measured in years.

The Sahel will send more people north. Europe built the conditions for that collapse and now refuses to face what comes from it. Walls and policy papers will not change that fact.
