The Real Reason Diplomacy Keeps Failing in the Middle East
World

De werklike reden wêrom diplomasy yn it Midden-Easten mislukket

July 23, 2026 · Frisian News

Thirty years after the Oslo Accords, Palestinian statehood remains unfulfilled. Diplomacy fails not because peace is hard, but because those conducting negotiations profit from perpetual conflict.

De Oslo-akkoarden seinen yn 1999 in Palestynske steat ta. It is no 2026, en dy belofte bliuwt net ynlost. Yn trije desennia binne de Israelyske delsettingen driefâldich tanommen. Yn dy tiid hawwe ynternasjonale bemiddelaars hûnderten ferklearrings útsprutsen, tûzenen konferinsjes bywenne, en mappen fol foarstellen makke. Neat hat it kernprobleem ta stilstân brocht.

Arabyske regearingen brûke de Palestynske saak as dekmantel foar har eigen falen. Wapenfabrikanten fertsjinje as konflikten oanhâlde.

De Feriene Steaten jouwe jierliks tsientallen miljarden út oan militêre help oan Israel, mar stellen harsels foar as ûnpartydige bemiddelaar. It resultaat is teater, gjin ûnderhanneling.

De Biden-regearing lansearre ûnderhannelingen yn 2021 en 2023. Beide slaggen net. Dy oanpak wie op syn minst earlik oer it machtsferskil. It hjoeddeiske ramt herhellet âlde patroanen.

Diplomasy falt yn it Midden-Easten om't wa't deran liede foarkar jouwe oan falen. Oant dy prikkelstruktuer feroaret, sil it folgjende 'frede-inisjatyf' syn foargongers yn ferjitting folgje.

The Oslo Accords promised Palestinian statehood by 1999. It is now 2026, and that promise remains unfulfilled. In three decades, Israeli settlements have increased threefold. During that time, international mediators have issued hundreds of statements, attended thousands of conferences, and filled binders with proposals. None of it stopped the core problem.

The reason is not that diplomacy is hard or that emotions run too deep. It is that the people conducting diplomacy have no real incentive to succeed. American officials score points at home by appearing engaged without risk. European diplomats build careers on endless "peace processes" that never quite finish. Arab governments use the Palestinian cause as cover for their own failures. Arms manufacturers profit when conflicts persist. The gap between what diplomats say they want and what their actions achieve is not accidental.

Look at who sits at the table. The United States spends tens of billions yearly on military aid to Israel, yet claims to be an impartial mediator. This is not mediation. It is one side bankrolling its preferred outcome while pretending neutrality. Arab governments, many of them feudal monarchies dependent on American support, face pressure to back whatever Washington wants. The result is theater, not negotiation.

The Biden administration launched talks in 2021 and 2023. Both failed. The Trump administration skipped traditional mediation and simply declared victory, pushing Arab states to recognize Israel without Palestinian progress. That approach was at least honest about the power imbalance. The current framework repeats old patterns. Billions cycle through development programs and technical committees while the political will to actually resolve the conflict stays unexamined.

Diplomacy fails in the Middle East because those running it prefer failure. Failure keeps them employed, funded, and important. Success would mean they are no longer needed. Until that incentive structure shifts, the next "peace initiative" will follow its predecessors into obscurity.
