The Gas Industry's Unfinished Cleanup in Groningen
Environment

De ûnfoltôge opromming fan de gasyndustry yn Grinslân

June 22, 2026 · Frisian News

Over half of identified contaminated gas sites in Groningen remain unremediated despite industry promises to finish by 2024. Residents absorb the environmental damage while cleanup costs climb and deadlines slip.

Hja groeven dochs.

Sûnder hanthaving, sûnder boetes dy't winst út fertraging oertreffe, ferspriedt fersmoarging him. Regeljoers wolle it probleem net hurd genôch oanpakke om wierlike foarútgong ôf te twingen.

Grinslân betelle twa kear foar gaswinning. Ienris doe't bedriuwen rykdom út de grûn pompten. Wer doe't de rekkens foar opromming ferskienen. De beloften fan de yndustry ferfagje flugger as de fersmoarging sels.

Shell and its partners promised to clean up contaminated gas fields across Groningen by 2024. Today, over half the identified sites remain unremediated. The industry has spent billions extracting gas from below the region for sixty years. The cleanup bill keeps climbing, deadlines slip, and residents absorb the damage.

The drilling created a sprawl of polluted land. Benzene, toluene, and other hydrocarbons soak into soil and groundwater. Farmers planted crops on contaminated fields. Children in nearby towns breathe air tainted by industrial vapors. The extraction companies knew the cost of cleanup would dwarf the profit from extraction. They extracted anyway.

Groningen bore the real price. Earthquakes from gas withdrawal cracked thousands of homes. The gas companies paid compensation slowly and grudgingly, fighting residents in court. Environmental remediation follows the same pattern: industry delays, budgets shrink, work stalls. A site officially cleaned today may need another cleanup in five years.

The Dutch state set the rules and collected taxes from gas sales. The companies that dug the wells will not voluntarily spend the sums needed for genuine cleanup. Without enforcement, without penalties that exceed the profit from delay, the contamination spreads. Regulators have proven unwilling to press the issue hard enough to force real speed.

Groningen paid twice for gas extraction. Once when companies pumped the wealth out of the ground. Again now, when the bills for cleanup come due. The industry's promises fade faster than the contamination itself.
