The dollar's share of global reserves fell to 59% last year, down from 71% in 2000. That number does not sound important until you understand what it means. Control the world's reserve currency, and you control most of global commerce. That control is slipping from American hands.

The institutions that enforced Pax Americana after 1945 are weakening. The dollar is no longer unquestioned. Europe builds its own defense industry instead of relying on American guarantees. Saudi Arabia and India shift trade away from dollar settlement. China became the world's largest trading partner to its neighbors by offering alternatives to the dollar system.

This collapse was not accidental. Washington chose overstretch. Two decades of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan burned through money and credibility. The 2008 financial crisis showed the world that American institutions were not as strong as advertised. When the Fed printed trillions to fix the mess, other countries decided to reduce their dependence on the dollar.

What replaces American dominance will not be gentler. A multipolar world means rising regional powers, alliances shift, and trade becomes a weapon. It may prove messier than the old order, not better. The difference is that no single power will be strong enough to set global rules or enforce them.

For smaller nations, the calculation has changed. You no longer choose between Washington or the wilderness. Now you choose between competing powers, each offering protection in exchange for control. That sounds better in theory. In practice, it means being caught between them.
