How Streaming Algorithms Decide What Culture Gets Made

Hoe Streamingalgoritmen Bepale hokker Kultuer Makke Wurdt

Streaming platforms use algorithms that predict week-one engagement. What cannot be predicted is never shown, never made. This gatekeeping decides what culture exists.

Spotify bepaalt hokker fan 100 miljoen nûmers jo hearre. In muzikant mei 500 harkers, sels as dy harkers fan muzyk hâlde, krijt gjin oanbefellings nei nij publyk. Spotify wachtet net op stadige groei. It algoritme foarspelt oft in nûmer yn wike ien miljoenen kearen spile wurde sil. Is dat net it gefal, dan ferdwynt it nûmer út it sicht.

Netflix hat itselde probleem, ien nivo heger. In senarioskriuwer biedt in drama oan oer lokale polityk. De studio fiert it troch foarspellende analyze. It algoritme seit dat dit net yn de earste 28 dagen syn hichtepunt berikke sil. It sil syn publyk oer moannen fine. Mar de streaming-ekonomy lit gjin moannen ta. De studio jout gjin grien ljocht oan de searje. De senarioskriuwer siket oar wurk.

Dit is gjin filterjen. Dit is poartbehearsking. In tradysjonele útjouwer, in platelabel, in studjobaas, hja nimme ferkearde besluten. Hja fersmite genie. Mei algoritmen wurdt neat fersmiten. It berikket nea it stadium fan beslútfoarming. It systeem bepaalt fan tefoaren hokker ferhalen wichtich binne, hokker muzyk heard wurdt, hokker keunst bestiet.

De platfoarms sizze dat dit is wat brûkers wolle. It algoritme jout oanbefellings op basis fan wat minsken earder besjoen hawwe. Mar it algoritme bepaalt ek wat brûkers sjen kinne. Jo buorfrou hie in Frysk folksmuzyknûmer ûntdekke kinnen as Spotify it har sjen litten hie. Mar it algoritme sil it net sjen litte, om't Spotify's gegevens sizze dat nimmen lykas sy ea dat soart muzyk spile hat. It algoritme ûntdekt kultuer net. It befêstiget wat al bestiet.

Wy neame dit frijheid. Miljoen nûmers, tûzenen shows, alles daliks beskikber. Mar it algoritme jout gjin oanbefellings. It toant dy deselde hûndert. Minsken meitsje kultuer. Masines bepale wat de wrâld sjocht. De masine keas derfoar feilich te spyljen.

Spotify controls which of 100 million songs you hear. A musician with 500 listeners, even if those listeners love the music, will not get recommended to new ears. Spotify does not wait for slow growth or word of mouth. The algorithm predicts whether a song will be heard millions of times in week one. If not, the song disappears from public view.

Netflix has the same problem, one level higher. A screenwriter pitches a drama about small-town governance. The studio runs it through predictive analytics. The algorithm says this will not spike in the first 28 days. It will find its audience over months. But streaming economics do not allow months. The studio does not greenlight the show. The screenwriter moves to another job.

This is not filtering. This is gatekeeping. A traditional publisher, a record label, a studio executive, they make wrong calls. They reject genius. With algorithms, nothing gets rejected. It never reaches the decision stage. The system decides in advance what kinds of stories matter, what music will be heard, what art exists.

The platforms say this is what users want. The algorithm recommends based on what people watched before. But the algorithm also shapes what users can see. Your neighbor might have discovered a Frisian folk album if Spotify showed it to her. But the algorithm will not show it because Spotify's data says nobody like her has ever played that kind of music before. The algorithm does not discover culture. It cements what already exists.

We call this freedom. Millions of songs, thousands of shows, all available instantly. But the algorithm does not recommend them. It shows you the same hundred. Humans make culture. Machines decide what the world sees. The machine chose to play it safe.
