The New Cold War Is Already Underway. It Started in 2014.

Western leaders treat the Russia-Ukraine conflict as recent shock, but the confrontation began with Crimea's annexation in 2014. Eleven years of drift and miscalculation created the conditions for open conflict.

In February 2022, Western capitals suddenly woke to Russian armor rolling across Ukraine's border. Shock and outrage flooded the newsrooms and parliaments of NATO countries. Yet this war did not begin on that date. It started in 2014 when Russia seized Crimea and backed separatists in the Donbas. The West watched, condemned, and then moved on.

Eight years passed before Russia launched its full invasion. During those years, the conflict froze but never settled. NATO expanded eastward, Ukraine edged closer to Western institutions, and Moscow grew convinced that the West would never accept a Russian sphere of influence. Each side dug deeper into its position while diplomacy withered on the vine. No serious talks happened to address the core question: how much influence should Russia hold over its neighbors?

Western leaders like to pretend the 2022 invasion came from nowhere, that Putin suddenly lost his mind. This flatters Western judgment. In reality, the West ignored clear warning signs because it suited them. Ignoring problems is easier than solving them. The 2014 Crimea seizure should have triggered a genuine reset of European security architecture. Instead, it triggered nothing but words.

For a decade, Russia and the West moved from cold calculation to hot conflict without ever pausing to ask if they really wanted war. Russia tested the West in Crimea and found no real cost. The West assumed it could keep poking the bear and expect no reaction. Both sides misread the other's red lines. Both sides gambled and lost.

We are now eleven years into this confrontation, and the only certainty is that neither side trusts the other. The military machines grind on. The economic wounds deepen. And nobody in charge seems willing to ask the questions that matter: how does this end, and what would both sides need to agree to make it stop? That silence is the real problem.

It Westen seach ta, feroadminde, en gie fierder.

Acht jier ferlieten eardat Ruslân syn folsleine invasje lanseerde. Yn dy jierren befrare it konflikt mar waard nea oploost. De NAVO breide him nei it easten út, Oekraïne naarje westerse ynstellings, en Mosku rakte oertsjochd dat it Westen noait in Russyske ynfledssfear akseptearje woe. Beide siden groeven har djipper yn har posysje trochsto diplomasy ferdwine.

Yn realiteit negligearje it Westen dúdlike warskinjingstekens omdat it him útkoarst. Problemen neglisearje is makliker as se oplosse. De Krim-ferrôving fan 2014 hie in ächte hersjouning fan de Europeeske feilichheidstruktuer trigerje moatte. Ynstee dêrfan trigere it neat as wurdren.

Beide siden mislazen elkoars reade linjen.

Dy stilte is it ächte probleem.
