Why Belgium Cannot Form a Government and Keeps Going Anyway
Politics

Wêrom België gjin regearing foarmje kin en dochs gewoan trochgiet

July 1, 2026 · Frisian News

Belgium has operated for 233 days without forming a new government, relying on a caretaker system that should not legally exist. The country survives because enough stakeholders profit from the political standoff to prefer stalemate over change.

België is no 233 dagen sûnder nije regearing. Ministers út de foarige koälysje ûndertekenje noch altyd budzjetten, passe wetten oan, en bestjoere it lân fia in needmaatregel dy't juridysk net bestean mei. Mar it wurket, want België hat gjin better alternatyf. De wiere striid giet net oer ideology. It giet derom hokker gebiet wat regearet en hoefolle rykdom fan it rikere Flaanderen nei it earmere Walonje streamt.

It probleem is djipper as koälysje-rekken. Flaanderen, it rikere noarden, triuwt fia N-VA foar mear autonomy of ûnôfhinklikheid. Walonje, it earmere suden, wol dat Brussel dield bliuwt en is bang foar ekonomyske ynstorting as it lân útinoar falt. Brussel sit dertussenyn, foar it grutste part Frânsksprekkend mar mei in Nederlânske taalrâne, en beide kanten easkje it op.

In grien-loftse koälysje betsjut miljeuregels dy't hânarbeiders yn beide regio's skeadigje. Elke opsje bedriget immen safolle dat blokkearjen feiliger fielt as akseptearjen.

België ûntdekte desenniums lyn in trúk: foarmje gjin regearing. Jou macht oan ministers dy't al yn funksje binne. It caretaker-kabinet fiert alle besteande programma's út, int alle besteande belestingen, en betellet alle besteande rekkens. Neat niijs begjint.

Of dy berekkening noch in desennium opgiet is in iepen fraach.

Belgium has gone 233 days without forming a new government. Ministers from the previous coalition still sign budgets, pass laws, and run the country via a caretaker arrangement that should not legally exist. But it works because Belgium has no better option. The real fight is not over ideology. It is about which region controls what and how much wealth flows from Dutch-speaking Flanders to French-speaking Wallonia.

The problem runs deeper than coalition math. Flanders, the richer north, pushes via N-VA for more autonomy or independence. Wallonia, the poorer south, wants Brussels to remain shared and fears economic collapse if the country breaks apart. Brussels sits in the middle, mostly French-speaking but with a Dutch-language edge, and both sides claim it. Add Brussels's own government, three regional assemblies, dozens of local councils, and Belgium becomes so divided that even splitting it apart may not fix what is broken.

Politicians from left, right, and center refuse to share power because the stakes are too high. A socialist Walloon coalition means money flows south, which Flanders rejects. An N-VA Flemish coalition means breaking the country, which Wallonia rejects. A green-left coalition means environmental rules that hurt blue-collar workers in both regions. Every option threatens someone enough that blocking it feels safer than accepting it.

Belgium found a trick decades ago: do not form a government at all. Hand power to the ministers already in office. The caretaker cabinet runs all existing programs, collects all existing taxes, pays all existing bills. Nothing new starts. Nothing old stops. Courts tolerate this because having the king rule directly looks even worse to everyone involved.

Belgium is held together not by agreement but by fear of what comes after disagreement. It works because enough people profit from the current standoff that change feels too risky to most. Whether that calculation holds for another decade remains an open question.
