Only 40 of 300 reserved seats were filled when Greta Thunberg appeared at the 22nd Zurich Film Festival for a panel on Western Sahara. The ZFF confirmed the figure but said it cannot determine whether a deliberate act caused the mass no-show.
Forty people sat in a hall reserved for 300 at the 22nd Zurich Film Festival when Greta Thunberg appeared at Cinema Corso for a panel discussion tied to the documentary "My Home of Wind and Sand." The Zurich Film Festival confirmed the number directly to Swiss outlet blue News: "We can confirm that there were about 40 people in the auditorium, even though the panel discussion had been fully booked in advance."
All 300 seats had been reserved in advance. The admission was free. The ZFF told blue News that demand ahead of the session was high and available seats were taken quickly, prompting the festival to retroactively cap bookings at four tickets per person. That still left 260 seats empty on the day.
Thunberg and the film crew told blue News they suspect a deliberate act of sabotage, with Morocco named as the possible organiser. The documentary that prompted the panel, directed by Austrian filmmaker Patrick Wally, follows Western Saharan activist Najla Mohamed Lamin and her campaign for independence from Moroccan control. Morocco has held most of the territory since Spain withdrew as a colonial power in the mid-1970s. Approximately 170,000 Sahrawi refugees have lived in camps near Tindouf, Algeria, for decades, according to lemaroc360.com.
Neither Thunberg nor the film crew has produced evidence linking Morocco to the empty seats. The ZFF confirmed to blue News that it had noticed unusually large reservation blocks ahead of the event and had adjusted those reservations down to the four-ticket cap. On whether a coordinated effort lay behind the mass no-show, the festival said: "At this time, we are unable to assess or comment on whether this was a deliberate act."
Thunberg still spoke. She described the film as "very moving" and said it dealt with a betrayal, of occupation and of a conflict the world has chosen to ignore, according to lemaroc360.com. "We must talk about it and spread the message; otherwise, we are hypocrites," she added.
The event sold out online. The ZFF described demand as high enough to impose a per-person cap. The question the attendance figures cannot answer is why 260 of those people reserved seats and then did not use them, whether from deliberate coordination, simple indifference, or something in between.
A United Nations referendum on Sahrawi self-determination, long promised, remains unfulfilled. The United States, France and Spain have each moved toward backing Morocco's autonomy proposal, according to lemaroc360.com. The conflict Thunberg came to publicise is real. The audience she drew was not.
The ZFF offered no baseline when asked whether mass no-shows at free events are common. "Unfortunately, we can't make a general statement about this, as it varies greatly," the festival told blue News.
Three hundred seats reserved. Forty filled.
Fjirtich minsken sieten yn in seal reservearre foar 300 op it 22e Zürich Film Festival doe't Greta Thunberg ferskynde yn Cinema Corso foar in paneldiskusje ferbûn oan de dokumintêre "My Home of Wind and Sand."
Marokko hâldt it grutste part fan it gebiet sûnt Spanje him yn 'e midden fan de jierren santich weromtrok as koloniale macht.
It ZFF befêstige oan blue News dat it foar it evenemint ûngewoan grutte reservearringsblokken opmurken hie en dy reservearringen nei it maksimum fan fjouwer kaartsjes ferleege hie.
"Wy moatte deroer prate en it boadskip ferspriede; oars binne wy hypokryten," foege se derta ta.
It evenemint wie online útferkocht.
It publyk dat se luts wie it net.
It ZFF joech gjin referinsjepunt doe't frege waard oft grutte net-opkomsten by fergese eveneminten gewoan binne. "Spitigernôch kinne wy hjiroer gjin algemiene útspraak dwaan, om't it in soad ferskilt," fertelde it festival oan blue News.
Trijehûndert plakken reservearre. Fjirtich fol.
