Jonge Friezen Fertrekke. Dit Is Wêrom't Se Net Weromkomme.

A generation educated in Dutch universities, working in Dutch cities, and priced out of Frisian housing is quietly severing its ties to the province.

It patroan is konsekwint. In jongere út in Frysk doarp makket de middelbere skoalle ôf en giet nei in universiteitsstêd. Se studearje fjouwer jier. Se fine wurk. It wurk is yn de stêd.

Wat dien wurde kin is Fryslân oantrekkeliker meitsje. Dat betsjut flugger ynternet. Wenningen foar jonge gesinnen. Lokale wurkgelegenheid dy't wat oars biedt as lânbou en toerisme. It betsjut de provinsje behannelje as earne it ynvestearjen wurdich.

Neat hjirfan bart op in betsjuttingsfolle skaal. En dus fertrekke de jongerein, fergriidzjet de provinsje en ferliest de taal wer in lichting sprekkers.

The pattern is consistent. A young person from a Frisian village finishes secondary school and leaves for a university city, Groningen, Utrecht, Amsterdam. They study for four years. They find work. The work is in the city. The friends are in the city. By the time they think about settling down, the house prices back home have risen to match city levels, the job market is thin, and the social infrastructure they would need, childcare, specialist healthcare, professional networks, is concentrated elsewhere.

They do not come back.

Fryslân's population has been gradually aging and shrinking for twenty years. The province loses roughly 3,000 people per year to outmigration, and the people who leave are disproportionately young, educated, and Frisian-speaking.

This is not a problem that policy can easily reverse. You cannot legislate culture back into existence. You cannot force companies to open offices in Heerenveen. You cannot make Amsterdam less attractive by decree.

What you can do is make Friesland more attractive. That means faster internet. It means housing for young families. It means local job creation that offers something other than agriculture and tourism. It means treating the province as somewhere worth investing in, rather than a quiet corner that votes reliably and does not cause trouble.

None of this is happening at meaningful scale. And so the young leave, and the province ages, and the language loses another cohort of speakers.
