Why South Korea's Birth Rate Is the World's Warning Sign

Wêrom't it bertesifer fan Súd-Korea in warskôging foar de wrâld is

South Korea's 0.72 birth rate is the world's lowest. High housing costs, childcare expenses, and work culture have made childbearing irrational for women.

Súd-Korea registrearre yn 2024 0,72 berten per frou. Gjin oar ûntwikkele lân is leger gien. Dit betsjut elk jier minder berten as stjerfgefallen. Seoul hat mear as 200 miljard dollar yn 20 jier oan it probleem útjûn. Neat dêrfan wurke.

De sifers lizze út wêrom. Berneopfang kostet 40 prosint fan wat in jonge mem yn in jier fertsjinnet. In appartement yn Seoul kostet 15 kear it jierynkommen. Wurkjende mems krije in kar dy't wurkjouwers ienfâldich meitsje: stopje of akseptearje dat de karriêre foarby is. Froulju dogge de wiskunde. Se kieze gjin man en gjin bern.

Regearingsprogramma's behannelje symtomen, net oarsaken. Fergese berneopfang lost de húsfestingskrisis net op. Belestingkoartingen feroarje de kultuer net dy't mems straft dy't swangerskipsferlof nimme. Seoul hat de echte fraach net steld: wêrom dizze betingsten akseptearje?

It ekonomyske model brekket sûnder befolkingsgroei. Pensjoenen hingje ôf fan jongere wurknimmers dy't foar âlderen betelje. It pensjoenstelsel giet út fan 1,2 wurknimmers per pensjonaris yn 2070. Korea richt him op 0,8. De wiskunde kloppet net. As dit bart, kiest de regearing foar legere pensjoenen of hegere belestingen op dy jongere wurknimmers, wat de ekonomy slimmer makket.

Dit bart as jo ekonomyske output maksimalisearje ten koste fan minsklike stabiliteit. Korea eksportearre dizze les nei de wrâld, oft it dat woe of net. De warskôging is dúdlik: gjin bedrach oan subsydzjes lost in systeem op dat it libben dreger makket foar minsken dy't gesinnen wolle.

South Korea recorded 0.72 births per woman in 2024. No other developed nation has gone lower. This means fewer births than deaths each year. Seoul has thrown more than 200 billion dollars at the problem over 20 years. None of it worked.

The numbers explain why. Childcare costs consume 40 percent of what a young mother earns in a year. A Seoul apartment costs 15 times a household's annual income. Working mothers face a choice employers make simple: quit or accept that your career is over. Women do the math. They choose no husband and no children.

Government programs treat symptoms, not causes. Free childcare does not solve the housing crisis. Tax credits do not change the culture that punishes mothers who take maternity leave. Seoul has not asked the real question: why accept these terms?

The economic model breaks without population growth. Pensions depend on young workers paying for the old. The pension system assumes 1.2 workers for every retiree by 2070. Korea is tracking toward 0.8. The math fails. When it does, government either cuts pensions or raises taxes on those young workers, making the trade worse.

This is what happens when you maximize economic output at the expense of human stability. Korea exported this lesson to the world whether it meant to or not. The warning is clear: no amount of subsidies fixes a system that makes life harder for people who want families.
