Why Immigration from Within the EU Changed the Netherlands More Than from Outside

August 1, 2026 · Frisian News

Internal EU migration transformed the Dutch labor market and housing more than non-EU immigration, yet policy debates centered almost entirely on non-EU migrants.

English

Between 2004 and 2024, large numbers of people from Eastern Europe arrived in the Netherlands. This far exceeds migration from outside the EU, yet political debate fixates on non-EU immigrants. One of the largest migration flows in recent Dutch history went almost unexamined.

Eastern European workers arrived with minimal restrictions after EU expansion in 2004. Employers welcomed the cheap labor immediately. Politicians counted the economic benefits but ignored the cost to Dutch workers. Employment statistics concealed the real story.

The official narrative blamed non-EU immigrants for housing shortages, wage pressure, and social strains. The facts pointed elsewhere. EU migrants took construction, care work, agriculture, and warehouse jobs across the country. Their presence kept wages down in those sectors for years.

By 2023, large numbers of Polish citizens were living in the Netherlands. Romanian, Bulgarian, and Lithuanian populations swelled the total. Demand from EU workers for housing pushed rents sharply higher. Yet the government framed the migration problem as asylum seekers, who represented only a fraction of total arrivals.

The Netherlands convinced itself it had solved immigration policy by debating non-EU quotas while one of Europe's largest internal migrations happened in plain sight. No one told the real story.

Tusken 2004 en 2024 arrivearren grutte oantallen minsken út East-Europa yn Nederlân. Dit is folle mear as migraasje fan bûten de EU, dochs rjochtet polityk debat him op net-EU-immigranten. Polityke lieders negerren dizze migraasjegolf foar it grutste part.

Yn 2023 libben grutte oantallen Poalske boargers yn Nederlân. Roemeenske, Bulgaarske en Litouwske befolkingsgroepen fergrutten it totaal. Fraach nei wenning fan EU-wurknimmers joech de hierren de hichte yn. Dochs definieare de regearing it migraasjeproblem as asylsykjers, dy't mar in diel fan totale oankomsten útmakken.

Nederlân waard derfan oertsjûge dat it immigraasjeproblem oplost wie troch te debattearjen oer net-EU-kwota's, wylst ien fan Europa's grutste ynterne migraasjes yn it folle sicht plak fûn. Nimmen fertelde it wiere ferhaal.
