Why Dogs Have Replaced Children in Dutch Cities

Wêrom Hûnen Bern Yn Nederlânske Stêden Ferfongen Hawwe

July 17, 2026 · Frisian News

Dog ownership surpasses child births in Dutch cities for the first time. Rising costs and shrinking urban spaces have made families impossible to support.

Yn Amsterdam, Rotterdam en Utrecht hat hûneigenaarskip no de bertesifers oertroffen. Bistefinkels binne talryker as bernedokters. In gesinshûn kostet minder as in bern. De sifers wjerspegelje in kar dy't nimmen tajout.

In bern yn in Nederlânske stêd kostet mear as 250.000 euro oant achttjin jier âld. Allinnich berneopfang kostet 1.200 oant 1.800 euro de moanne. De wenningmerk priizget jonge gesinnen út. In hûn freget gjin hypoteek, gjin skoalgeld, gjin achttjin jier tawijing oan in ûnwisse takomst. As de sifers sa dúdlik binne, is de kar net langer mysterieus.

Stêdebouwers hawwe stêden boud foar wurknimmers en konsumpsje, net foar gesinnen. Appartementen krimpe. Parken wurde kafe's. Boartersplakken ferdwine. De ynfrastruktuer giet út fan immen dy't allinnich, mobyl en bêrnleas is. In hûn past yn dit libben. Bern net.

Nimmen fiert dit as foarútgong. Mar nimmen beweecht him om it te feroarjen. Nederlânske stêden hawwe in kar makke oer wa't dêr wennet troch ien opsje betelber te meitsjen en de oare ûnmooglik. Hûnen hawwe bern net ferfongen. Belied wol.

In Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht, dog ownership has now exceeded birth rates. Pet stores outnumber pediatricians. A family dog costs less than one child. The numbers reflect a choice nobody admits has been made.

Raising a child in a Dutch city costs more than 250,000 euros by age eighteen. Childcare alone runs 1,200 to 1,800 euros each month. Housing markets price young families out. A dog requires no mortgage, no school fees, no eighteen-year commitment to an uncertain future. When the numbers are this clear, the choice stops being mysterious.

Urban planners built cities for workers and consumption, not families. Apartments shrink. Parks become cafes. Playgrounds vanish. The infrastructure assumes you are single, mobile, and childless. A dog fits this life. Children do not.

The pet industry has noticed the opportunity. Dog trainers, nutritionists, therapists, and wellness centers multiply. Major retailers stock premium dog food while parents hunt for affordable baby formula. Society invests in animal comfort but rations support for families. The market shows us what we actually value, not what we claim to value.

Nobody celebrates this as progress. Yet nobody moves to change it. Dutch cities have made a choice about who lives there by making one option affordable and the other impossible. Dogs did not replace children. Policy did.
