$1 Million Settlement Binds Starbucks to Nationwide DEI Hiring Rules
September 26, 2026 · Frisian News
Starbucks agreed on September 17, 2026 to pay Florida $1 million and drop race- and sex-based hiring quotas across all U.S. operations, settling a civil rights lawsuit filed nine months earlier. The terms bind every store the company operates in America, not just its more than 900 Florida locations.
Starbucks agreed on September 17, 2026, to pay Florida $1 million and to stop using race- or sex-based quotas in hiring, promotion and pay decisions across all of its United States operations, settling a civil rights lawsuit that the state filed nine months earlier.
The financial penalty is modest relative to what Florida sought. The $1 million goes to the Florida Department of Legal Affairs to cover litigation costs. Florida had originally sought $10,000 for each alleged discriminatory act involving a Florida resident, with potential exposure the state estimated at tens of millions of dollars or more. Starbucks, which reported $9.3 billion in fiscal third-quarter revenue according to Yahoo Finance, pays the equivalent of roughly 0.01 percent of one quarter's sales.
The terms go well beyond the money. Starbucks' chief legal officer must submit annual certifications of compliance for four years. The company also agreed not to participate in organizations that require it to increase the racial diversity of its board of directors. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier's office confirmed to Fox News Digital that the agreement applies to all Starbucks operations nationwide, not only its more than 900 Florida stores.
Florida's December 2025 lawsuit alleged that Starbucks had set a goal for people of color to fill 40 percent of retail and manufacturing jobs and 30 percent of corporate positions by 2025, according to Fox News Digital. The complaint also alleged that the company tied executive bonuses to diversity goals before March 2024, and that for fiscal year 2024, bonus criteria included requirements that executives mentor Black, Indigenous and other employees of color, hold monthly meetings with mentees and keep retention among those workers above a stated threshold. The complaint further alleged that Florida Starbucks employees and job applicants contacted the attorney general's office and reported feeling excluded or humiliated because they were white. Starbucks denied that these practices violated the law.
Uthmeier framed the outcome plainly. "Every Floridian deserves to be hired, promoted and compensated based on merit, qualifications and character, not race or sex," he told Fox News Digital. "DEI can never be an excuse to violate civil rights." Starbucks Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer Pilar Ramos said the company was "pleased to have resolved this matter without admission of wrongdoing."
The settlement does not establish that Starbucks broke the law, and a parallel case shows that outcome is not guaranteed. U.S. District Judge John Ross dismissed Missouri's federal lawsuit in February 2026 after finding that the state had not identified a single Missouri resident who actually suffered harm from the alleged policies, according to usaherald.com and Fox News Digital. Missouri has appealed. Florida's case ended through a negotiated agreement carrying companywide obligations; Missouri's was dismissed on the adequacy of the state's pleading.
Starbucks is not alone in retreating from formal DEI structures. Buildremote.co tracks 103 companies with at least 1,000 employees that have reduced, rolled back or eliminated DEI programmes. McDonald's announced it would end aspirational workforce representation goals in early January 2025. IBM eliminated its Diversity Council in May 2025. Verizon's May 2025 FCC merger approval specifically cited the company's commitment to ending DEI-related practices. Amazon wound down some diversity efforts in March 2025. Law firms including Kirkland and Ellis and Latham and Watkins removed certain DEI policies in April 2025; White and Case dismantled its DEI department entirely, also in April 2025.
Other state attorneys general now have a template, a signed agreement and a price.
De betingsten gean fierder as allinne it jild. De haad-juridysk offisier fan Starbucks moat fjouwer jier lang jierlikse sertifikaasjes fan neilibjen yntsjinje. It bedriuw hat ek ynstimd net diel te nimmen oan organisaasjes dy't fan har easkje de rassiale ferskaat fan har ried fan bestjoer te fergrutsjen. It kantoar fan Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier befêstige oan Fox News Digital dat de oerienkommen jildt foar alle Starbucks-aktiviteiten yn it hiele lân, net allinne de mear as 900 winkels yn Florida.
Starbucks is net it iennige bedriuw dat him fan formele DEI-struktueren ôfkeart. Buildremote.co hâldt 103 bedriuwen by mei op syn minst 1.000 meiwurkers dy't DEI-programma's fermindere, ynlutsen of ôfskaft hawwe. McDonald's kundige begjin jannewaris 2025 oan dat it syn ambisjeuze doelen foar fertsjintwurdiging fan it personiel beëinigje soe. IBM skafte syn Diversity Council ôf yn maaie 2025. Amazon boud yn maart 2025 guon ferskaatheidsinisjativen ôf. Advokatekantoren lykas Kirkland and Ellis en Latham and Watkins skaften yn april 2025 bepaalde DEI-belieden ôf; White and Case ûntmantele syn hiele DEI-ôfdieling, ek yn april 2025.
Oare attorney generals fan steaten hawwe no in sjabloan, in tekene oerienkommen en in priis.
