Why the Dutch Coalition System Is Broken
Politics

Wêrom it Nederlânske Koälysjestelsel Net Wurket

The Dutch need to form coalition governments after every election, forcing smaller parties to extract concessions that leave the country ungovernable. This system rewards obstruction, not leadership.

It Nederlânske koälysjestelsel twingt sterke premiers om foar lytse partijen te krûpen dy't mar 15 of 20 sitten yn it parlemint kontrolearje.

Fergelykje dit mei Grut-Brittanje of Dútslân. Yn Grut-Brittanje foarmet de winner fan in ferkiezing in regearing, punt út. De ferlearer tredt ôf. Yn Dútslân binne koälysjebeperkingen, mar gruttere partijen dominearje dy. Yn Nederlân kin in partij mei 30 sitten in koälysje gizelje oer ien beliedsklausule. It resultaat binne regearingen dy't net regearje kinne, dy't harren beloften yntlûke, en dy't mear tiid besteegje oan it behearjen fan ynterne konflikten as oan it tsjinjen fan boargers.

De echte skea lit sjen hoe traach Nederlân grutte problemen oanpakt. Wenningbelied stagnearret. Ynvestearring yn ynfrastruktuer wankelet. Belestingherfoarmings barre noait.

Kompromis wurket prima as twa partijen fan gelikense grutte ûnderhannelje. It wurdt sjantagearring as in partij mei 5% fan de stimmen in sikehuissluiting of snelheidsgrins blokkearje kin. It Nederlânske systeem foarkomt gjin ekstremisme, it foarkomt kompetinsje.

English

The latest Dutch coalition talks collapsed after seven months of haggling between VVD, PvdA, and the Greens. The three parties could not agree on pension reform, causing the entire deal to implode. This is not an accident. The Dutch coalition system forces strong prime ministers to grovel before small parties that control just 15 or 20 seats in parliament.

Compare this to Britain or Germany. In Britain, the winner of an election forms a government, period. The loser leaves office. In Germany, coalition rules exist but larger parties dominate them. In the Netherlands, a party with 30 seats can hold a coalition hostage over a single policy clause. The result is governments that cannot govern, that backtrack on promises, and that spend more time managing internal disputes than serving citizens.

The real damage shows in how slowly the Netherlands moves on major problems. Housing policy stalls. Infrastructure investment falters. Tax reform never happens. Each coalition agreement reads like a lawyer wrote it, full of carve-outs and exemptions that leave no room for bold action. Smaller parties do this on purpose. They know they will never lead, so they block anything that might benefit a rival bloc or upset their own base.

Politicians will tell you that coalition forces compromise and prevents extremism. This is nonsense. Compromise works fine when two parties of similar size negotiate. It becomes blackmail when a party with 5% of votes can veto a hospital closure or a speed limit change. The Dutch system does not prevent extremism, it prevents competence.

Some nations have fixed electoral thresholds or require larger coalitions to form. Others use majority voting for key laws. The Netherlands should consider one of these paths, because the current setup guarantees that whoever wins the election still loses the right to lead. That is not democracy. That is chaos dressed in a suit.
