Microplastics Are in Human Blood. Nobody Knows What This Means.
Environment

Mikroplastics sitte yn minsklik bloed. Nimmen wit wat dit betsjut.

Researchers have confirmed microplastics circulate in human blood, but lack evidence of harm. The plastic industry and regulators remain silent while scientists debate whether the particles pose real health risks.

Yn 2023 fûnen Nederlânske ûndersikers kunststofdieltjes yn de bloedsomrin fan 77 prosint fan de testpersoannen. Trije jier letter witte wy noch altyd net oft dizze dieltjes ús skea dogge. De stúdzje soarge foar keppelings oer sûnenrisiko's, mar ferfolchûndersyk hat net folle mear opsmiten as befêstiging dat mikroplastics yn minsklik weefsel foarkomme. Underwilens hat de kunststofyndustry gjin inkelde grutte finansiering foar ûndersyk beskikber steld nei wat der bart as dizze fragminten yn it lichem bedarje.

It bewiis oant no ta fertelt ús hast neat oer gefaar.

Wat wichtich is, is net allinne it dieltje mar de gemyske koktail dy't it meinimmt.

Regearingen hawwe it net folle better dien.

In 2023, Dutch researchers found plastic particles in the bloodstreams of 77 percent of test subjects. Three years later, we still do not know if these particles harm us. The study sparked headlines about health risks, but follow-up research has yielded little beyond confirmation that microplastics exist in human tissue. Meanwhile, the plastic industry has not funded a single major investigation into what happens when these fragments enter the body.

The evidence so far tells us almost nothing about danger. A 2024 German study found microplastics in placentas but measured no health difference between mothers with high and low plastic concentrations. Another team in Sweden detected particles in bloodstreams yet concluded that "the health significance remains unclear." The World Health Organization stopped short of declaring microplastics a public health threat. No regulatory agency has moved to restrict microplastic sources based on human exposure data.

Plastics manufacturers and their trade groups have spent years claiming that because the particles are small, they pose no risk. This argument rests on the assumption that size alone determines safety, which ignores what the plastic carries. Microplastics absorb pollutants from the environment and can breach the blood-brain barrier in animal tests. What matters is not just the particle but the chemical cocktail it drags along. The industry funds studies showing no harm while ignoring questions about additives and absorbed toxins.

Governments have done little better. The European Union released a "strategic approach" to microplastics in 2024 that amounted to voluntary guidelines and promises to study the problem further. No bans. No mandatory reporting. No limits on plastic production or use. French researchers who found microplastics in human organs called for precautionary action, but no country has acted. Regulators wait for perfect proof of harm before restricting anything, a standard they rarely apply to chemicals from other industries.

The real problem is that we created this mess without ever asking if we should. Plastic makers flooded the world with products designed to fall apart into tiny pieces, then claimed they could not possibly be dangerous. Now we find these particles everywhere, humans included, and nobody wants to take responsibility. The industry profits. The science gets muddied. And we all breathe it in while waiting for someone to care enough to investigate properly.
