Hoe Nederlân Europa's grutste fleiseksporteur waard

The Netherlands exports more meat than France, Germany, and Denmark combined. Over four decades, small farms consolidated into industrial operations dependent on foreign feed imports.

Nederlân eksportearret mear fleis as Frankryk, Dútslân en Denemark by elkoar, wêrtroch it Europa's grutste eksporteur nei folume is. Foarich jier stjoerden Nederlânske buorkerijen mear as 3 miljoen ton rûndfleis, bargefleis en pluimfee nei de hiele wrâld. Dizze transformaasje fan lânbouplak ta wrâldmacht duorre mar fjouwer desennia.

Dit barde net by tafal. Yn fjirtich jier konsolidearren lytse famyljebedriuwen harren ta grutte yndustriële operaasjes.

As ketens brekke of hannelsregels feroarje, begjint it systeem te wibeljen.

It wurket min foar lytse boeren, dy't út it lânskip ferdwûnen. It wurket hielendal net foar minsken dy't fan it wetter drinke moatte.

The Netherlands exports more meat than France, Germany, and Denmark combined, making it Europe's largest exporter by volume. Last year, Dutch farms shipped over 3 million tons of beef, pork, and poultry worldwide. This transformation from agricultural backwater to global powerhouse took only four decades.

This didn't happen by chance. Over forty years, small family farms consolidated into massive industrial operations. Feed companies, slaughterhouses, and export traders grew wealthy from consolidating supply chains. The government backed this model with subsidies and infrastructure investment. Small farmers couldn't compete and sold out to larger operations.

The meat industry now depends on imports for feed and exports for survival. The Netherlands imports soy from Brazil and corn from Ukraine to fatten livestock, then exports the meat back to those same regions. If supply chains break or trade rules change, the system falters. Dutch agricultural policy bet everything on this model instead of building resilience.

Policymakers marketed this as efficiency and progress. They didn't mention the nitrogen pollution from intensive farming, the antibiotic resistance emerging in pig farms, or the fact that feed production drives deforestation thousands of miles away. The boom created jobs in processing plants and logistics, but the costs fell on rural water supplies and public health.

The meat export machine works brilliantly for export traders and feed corporations. It works poorly for small farmers, who vanished from the landscape. It works not at all for people who have to drink the water.
