Germany's Federal Statistical Office recorded 4,941 German citizens moving to Poland in 2025, more than emigrated to Britain, Italy or the Netherlands. With only 1,720 moving the other way, Germany posted a net loss of over 3,200 people to its eastern neighbor.
4,941 Germans moved to Poland in 2025, Germany's Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) recorded, the highest total since the coronavirus pandemic. That placed Poland ahead of Britain, Italy and the Netherlands as a destination for German citizens.
The flow ran almost entirely one way. Destatis recorded only 1,720 moves from Poland to Germany in the same period, leaving Germany with a net loss to its eastern neighbor. Handelsblatt reporter Christian Wermke asked the obvious question in the financial daily: what works better in Poland's economy, and what would Germany need to change to stop losing skilled workers permanently?
Kevin Wörner, a 33-year-old who relocated from Berlin to Warsaw, told Handelsblatt the contrast is hard to miss. "There is an incredible sense of a new beginning here," he said. "Everyone here is very optimistic." He cited lower taxes, less bureaucracy, stronger digitalization and a more business-friendly environment, adding that he had the impression "everything is a bit simpler here and more conducive to entrepreneurship."
Practical differences back up the sentiment. Interviewees in the Handelsblatt report pointed to Polish digital tools such as the BLIK mobile payment system and the mObywatel government app as examples of efficiency that stood out to newcomers. Jens Althoff, head of the Warsaw office of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, acknowledged that many Germans still carry a "rather distorted image of Poland," pointing to infrastructure investment, high levels of digitalization, punctual trains and well-maintained stations as visible markers of the gap.
Althoff also observed that younger Poles tend to prioritize achievement and delivery over the work-life balance discussions that dominate German workplaces.
Poland still ranks behind Switzerland, Austria and Spain among the most popular destinations for German citizens, Destatis data show. Poland's presence near the top of that list marks a change. Destatis separately recorded 8,900 Germans moving to the United States in 2025, a figure that prompted its own press release from the statistical office.
Germany's total emigration reached approximately 1.2 million people in 2025, according to Mediendienst Integration's analysis of Destatis figures, though the vast majority were foreign nationals leaving rather than German citizens. Of the roughly 290,000 German citizens who emigrated that year, Poland captured a growing share. A parallel trend runs in reverse: Poles who had settled in Germany have been returning home, Handelsblatt reported.
Nearly 5,000 German citizens chose to move there in 2025. Only 1,720 made the opposite journey.
