Tower Hamlets Council advertised its annual Islamophobia Awareness Month conference to begin at 11:00am on November 10, the traditional hour of the national two-minute silence, one day before Armistice Day. The event is hosted by Mayor Lutfur Rahman's Aspire party, which holds 33 of the borough's 45 council seats.

11:00am on November 10 is the start time Tower Hamlets Council chose for its annual Islamophobia Awareness Month conference.

The council published the booking on its LinkedIn account and on a public ticketing page. Both list registration from 10:30am at the Grocers Wing of Tower Hamlets Town Hall on Whitechapel Road, with the formal programme running from 11:00am to 12:30pm.

The council described the event as part of Islamophobia Awareness Month under the theme "Don't Let It Slide," which its LinkedIn post said "calls on us all to recognise, challenge and respond to Islamophobia wherever it occurs." The keynote speakers listed on the public ticket page include Deputy Mayor Cllr Maium Talukdar, cabinet lead for faith; Dr Rizwana Hamid, director of the Centre for Media Monitoring at the Muslim Council of Britain, billed to address "Systemic Racism, Media Biases, and the Social Cost of Anti-Muslim Narrative Frameworks"; and Kevin Courtney, former joint secretary of the National Education Union and current chair of the Together Alliance.

The council is run by Mayor Lutfur Rahman's Aspire party, which won 33 of 45 council seats in the May 7, 2026, election, up from 22 in 2022, despite fresh government intervention in March 2026. Middle East Forum research puts 73 percent of council seats in the hands of Bengali Muslim councillors.

Rahman's own record is a matter of public court rulings. In 2015, election court judge Richard Mawrey found him guilty of corrupt and illegal electoral practices in the 2014 mayoral election, barring him from office for five years, according to Middle East Forum research. Tower Hamlets Slice reporting on the case records that Mawrey found organised false registrations among party candidates, postal votes taken from residents against their will, and council grants steered toward politically aligned organisations. Police opened Operation Lynemouth and reviewed 170 allegations in total. Eighty-four were found not to amount to a criminal offence, 9 were duplicates, and 16 were errors. No cases were ever referred for charging decisions.

Rahman won the 2022 mayoral race and consolidated Aspire's grip on the borough in 2026.

Middle East Forum research puts roughly 43 percent of the borough's children in poverty. Tower Hamlets generates around £40 billion in GDP a year. The council's conference publicity addressed neither.

A borough with that poverty rate has more pressing claims on a Tuesday morning than a conference at that hour.
