Kenya's second Ebola death is a 65-year-old woman who had been in quarantine since 6 October and was a close family member of the index case. Nine cases are now confirmed, with seven patients still receiving treatment.

Two Kenyans have died from Ebola. The second victim, a 65-year-old woman and close family member of the outbreak's first fatality, died on the evening of 23 October 2026 at the Infectious Disease Unit in Nairobi, Kenya Ministry of Health Director General Patrick Amoth confirmed.

She had been under quarantine since 6 October, the day Kenya identified its first Ebola case, according to the ebola-tracker.org situation report compiled from Kenya Ministry of Health and WHO data. She developed symptoms on 13 October, was isolated the same day and tested positive at both the National Virology Reference Laboratory and the KEMRI laboratory. The quarantine system found her. It did not save her.

Amoth, speaking on 23 October, told reporters that all nine confirmed cases remain linked to a single cluster with no evidence of community transmission. "Her passing is a painful reminder that Ebola is a serious disease that can be fatal, and patients can change condition suddenly without warning," Amoth said, according to Kenyans.co.ke. The Ministry added that it is working with the family to arrange a safe, dignified burial under established public health protocols.

On 14 October, after Kenya confirmed its second case, the Ministry declared the response was "working as designed," as reported by The Standard. By 20 October, there were nine confirmed cases. The Ministry's assurance of orderly containment sat alongside a case count that grew from two to nine in six days.

An additional obstacle is the specific virus involved. Kenya is dealing with the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, which the BBC reports has no approved vaccine or treatment, though trials are under way. Seven of the nine confirmed patients remain in care at two isolation facilities.

The broader outbreak dwarfs Kenya's numbers. More than 4,000 people have died in Africa since Ebola was confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo in May, making it the second most deadly outbreak of the disease, the BBC reports. The International Rescue Committee has warned that Kenya, with more than 9,500 DRC cases confirmed across the border, faces a steady risk of further imported infections. The index patient reached Nairobi via 11 stops including three flights from Bas-Uélé province between 26 August and 3 October, ebola-tracker.org records show.

Kenya has screened 709,093 travellers at points of entry and introduced digital surveillance forms for arrivals from the DRC and nine other designated high-risk countries, ebola-tracker.org reports. The United States has warned its citizens against travelling to Kenya. Uganda has barred DRC travellers from transiting via Entebbe airport, a route Kenya's first case and Nigeria's first confirmed Ebola patient are both believed to have used.

All 135 identified contacts have been traced. The confirmed case count has not moved since 20 October. The second death proves that tracing a person is not the same as curing them.
