609 migrants crossed the English Channel in eight dinghies on a single Monday in October 2026, one arrival every six minutes, as the weekly total of 1,739 set a new October record and pushed the year cumulative to 20,935.

609 people crossed the English Channel in eight boats on a single Monday, one arrival roughly every six minutes, during a week that produced the highest October crossing rate since small boat records began in 2018, according to Home Office figures compiled by asthingsstand.co.uk.

The week of 1 to 7 October brought 1,739 arrivals aboard 23 vessels, averaging more than ten per hour and nearly 250 per day. That total surpasses the previous October weekly record of 1,368, set during the same period in 2024, and pushes the 2026 cumulative total to 20,935.

Two men died during a crossing attempt on Monday morning. Authorities renewed appeals urging migrants not to attempt the journey. The week's arrival numbers suggest those appeals had no measurable effect.

One vessel carrying 114 people made landfall at Gosport in Hampshire, only the third migrant boat to reach Britain directly from the Normandy coast. Smuggling networks have shifted their launch sites westward along the French coastline to avoid the higher concentration of police and gendarmes in the Pas-de-Calais, and to complicate interception by a newly established seaborne police unit operating in the Strait of Dover.

The structural shift shows in the numbers. Across the week, migrants averaged 75 per boat, reflecting the gangs' move to larger craft capable of carrying between 100 and 260 people in a single crossing. Successful interdiction of boat and equipment supply chains has made smaller vessels harder to source; the networks have consolidated passenger loads onto fewer, larger dinghies, reducing operational exposure while maintaining throughput.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, speaking ahead of the Labour Party Conference, attributed the government's limited capacity to halt crossings to Brexit, arguing that departure from the EU had damaged bilateral enforcement arrangements. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp countered with an accusation that Labour had left the borders "wide open." The current administration oversaw roughly 2,000 crossings in its first fortnight in office, according to asthingsstand.co.uk.

The arrival of the Gosport vessel triggered a demonstration by approximately 350 anti-migrant protesters. The gathering turned violent and ended with twelve arrests.

The 2026 cumulative total of 20,935 sits 41 per cent below the equivalent point last year, which points to some downward pressure from policy over time. Unusually calm October seas allowed smuggling networks to operate at near-summer frequency, and the record weekly total shows the gangs retain the capacity to exploit any favourable window the weather provides.

When the weather turns, the boats stay in France. When it clears, 609 people arrive.
